AT the beginning of this month, the State Bank of India (SBI), took the decision to half the maximum cash a Classic or Maestro Debit Card holder can withdraw in a day. The decision will come into effect from October 31, 2018. However, the bank has also issued the guidelines on how to withdraw more than Rs 20,000 from SBI ATM after that date.
As per the information available on SBI’s official website, “Daily Cash withdrawal limits for Classic and Maestro Debit Cards reduced from Rs. 40,000/- to Rs. 20,000/- per day with effect from 31st Oct 2018. If you require higher daily cash withdrawal limit, please apply for a higher card variant.”
As per the first line of the statement, the new ATM cash withdrawal rules are applicable only on SBI Classic and Maestro Debit Cards.
The second line of the notification carries significance. It clearly states that there are ways to withdraw more than Rs 20,000 in a day. It says that SBI account holders, who have the requirement of higher daily withdrawal limit, can apply for higher card variants, which have higher withdrawal limits.

Why SBI Took The Decision:
As per the media reports, the bank in a communication to its branches said, “In view of the increase in the number of complaints received by banks around fraudulent transactions at ATMs and to encourage digital and cashless transactions, it has been decided to decrease the cash withdrawal limits of debit cards issued or being issued on ‘Classic’ and ‘Maestro’ platforms.” SBI has directed all its branches to display the message on notice boards.
So, the SBI took such decision to serve two purposes. One, to prevent fraudulent transactions at ATMs; and second, to promote digital transactions.
Now, How To Withdraw More:
As the SBI says, “If you require a higher daily cash withdrawal limit, please apply for a higher card variant.”
In other words, customers with a requirement for higher ATM withdrawals can switch to card variants offering the higher withdrawal limit. SBI’s debit card variants come with different ATM withdrawal limits.
For example, the SBI Platinum International Debit Card allows ATM withdrawals of up to Rs 1 lakh daily while the Gold Debit Card allows Rs 50,000 per day. However, these cards have different sets of eligibility criteria, including maintaining a higher minimum balance in their bank accounts.
The SBI offers several types of debit cards which have different ATM withdrawal limits. To know the various higher card variants, go to the SBI Official Website where information about SBI’s different debit cards, eligibility criteria for applying & how to apply are available in detail.
