What Is Transit Visa?

A transit visa is a short-term visa that enables you to visit a country during your International midway stop. It means that if you are going to the USA from India, and your flight stops at London, a transit visa will authorize you to visit London. Generally, a transit visa is obtained if the connecting flight is after nearly 15-20 hours.

Transit visa is a temporary visa that will allow you to leave the airport and return before your next connecting flight. It serves as a certificate to exit the airport and re-enter it.  One thing you have to keep in mind that transit visa is only for those countries wherein you have a long layover.

Issuance of transit visa depends upon your nationality and destination country. According to your nationality and destination country, you may need to obtain a transit visa to make a connection in a foreign airport or cross through a foreign country.

You are recommended to check the entry and travel regulations for your destination countries prior to departure. If you fail to obey rules and regulations, you have to fees or fines.

Types of Transit Visa:


Transit visa may be of two typesAirport Transit Visa & Short Stay Visa. For example, France has two types of transit visa.

Airport Transit Visa:

An airport transit visa permits a traveller to pass through the international zone of an airport, without entering the country’s territory. However, one important point should be noted here that not all foreign travellers are subject to this regulation. You are expected to contact the embassy of your connection country for the detailed and precise information.

Short Stay Visa:

The short stay visa could be obtained by a traveller who wants to go from one non-Schengen country to another non-Schengen country by crossing through the territory of France or any other Schengen member country. The visa may be valid for 1 or several crossings of a maximum duration of up to 5 days each.

Schengen member countries are 26 European states that have officially abolished passport and all other types of border control at their mutual borders.
